Ayurvedsutra Vol 07 issue 10 47 - KESAR for equilibrium of Tri-doshas

When taken in small quantities and regularly, saffron helps bring the equilibrium of the three doshas — vata, pitta and kapha. Basically, its Ayurvedic nature is hot and it should not be taken more than 250 milligrams daily as medicine and 100 milligram daily as food.

Saffron is like tiny fibres found in bright red and orange colours. These fibres are stamina of the delicate flowers of Crocus sattivum. The plant is less than 30 cm (1feet) high with thin long leaves. Flowers are purple in colour and inside female flowers, there are bright red-coloured stamina, which are about 2-2 ½ cm (1 inch) long. These are delicately taken out and dried. Plantation and preparation of saffron needs a tremendous amount of delicate work and care. This is why saffron is very expensive. On the other hand, the quantity required for food and medicine is also very minute.

The saffron plant is originally from southern Europe. It is cultivated in Spain, Italy, Greece and France, and exported to other parts of the world. In India, it is cultivated in Jammu and Kashmir and is also imported from France and Spain.
