Ayurveda Education Gets a Boost: MP to Launch Super Speciality DM Courses

The Government of Madhya Pradesh is set to introduce three-year Doctorate of Medicine (DM) courses in Ayurveda colleges across the state, aiming to promote superspecialisation in traditional medicine.
The move is aligned with broader efforts to strengthen advanced education and clinical expertise within the Ayurveda system.
Coverage Across 39 Colleges
Madhya Pradesh currently has 39 Ayurveda colleges, including seven government-run and 32 private institutions. These are located in cities such as Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Gwalior, Ujjain, and Rewa, among others.
The introduction of DM courses is expected to enhance academic and clinical capabilities across these institutions.
Admission Criteria and Structure
The DM programs will span three years and are designed for postgraduate Ayurveda students. Candidates must hold an MD or MS degree in Ayurveda to be eligible.
Admissions will be conducted through a competitive examination similar to the All India AYUSH Post Graduate Entrance Test, mirroring the superspeciality entry structure seen in allopathic education.
Focus on Specialised Fields
The new DM courses will cover advanced disciplines, including:
Psychiatry
Hepatology
Oncology
Orthopedics
Reproductive Medicine
Gerontology
These programs aim to develop expertise in specialised clinical practice, research, and advanced theoretical knowledge within Ayurveda.
Regulatory Framework and Approvals
The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) has issued a circular outlining the process for implementation.
Ayurveda colleges will need to submit formal applications through their respective universities and obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the state government before launching the courses.
Rakesh Pandey, Executive President of the Private Ayurveda College Teachers’ Welfare Association and National Spokesperson for the AYUSH Medical Association, emphasised that securing state approval is a crucial first step.
Push for Advanced Ayurveda Education
The initiative reflects a broader push to strengthen Ayurveda education and align it with modern standards of specialisation and research. It also follows similar developments in other states, including plans to expand institutional capacity and advanced training in traditional medicine systems.
