Ayurveda ncert - NCERT Adds Ayurveda to School Science Curriculum

The National Council of Educational Research and Training has introduced Ayurveda-based content into its science curriculum for students from Classes 6 to 8. The move follows government directives aimed at integrating India’s traditional knowledge systems into mainstream education.

New chapters have been added to science textbooks to familiarise students with foundational concepts of Ayurveda, focusing on holistic health and lifestyle practices.

Focus on Holistic Health in Class 8

According to NCERT Director Dinesh Prasad Saklani, the inclusion of Ayurvedic principles is intended to promote holistic education.

In the Class 8 science textbook Curiosity, a dedicated chapter explains how Ayurveda emphasises balance between the body, mind, and environment. It introduces students to concepts such as Dinacharya (daily routine) and Ritucharya (seasonal routine), encouraging habits like balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and mental awareness.

Ancient Concepts Introduced in Class 6

Ayurvedic principles have also been incorporated into the Class 6 Curiosity textbook. The content includes traditional classifications of substances based on ancient texts like Ashtanga Hridaya Sutra Sthana, which describe twenty opposing qualities (gunas).

This approach aims to help students develop a deeper understanding of health, nutrition, and their relationship with nature through an integrated perspective.

Expansion Planned for Higher Education

The initiative is expected to extend beyond school education. The University Grants Commission is set to develop Ayurveda-focused curricula for higher education institutions.

This step is part of a broader effort to integrate traditional medical knowledge into academic frameworks at multiple levels.

Joint Efforts by NCERT and UGC

Union AYUSH Minister Prataprao Jadhav stated that NCERT and UGC are collaborating to design course modules spanning school to university education. The goal is to help students understand principles of holistic health from an early stage.

Several states, including Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh, have already incorporated elements of the Indian Knowledge System into their curricula.

Teacher Training and Implementation

To ensure effective implementation, Ayurveda-related topics are also being included in teacher training programmes. Orientation sessions, workshops, and handbooks are being developed to support educators in delivering the updated curriculum.
