Ayush Genomics - India Launches Ayush-Genomics Portal for Personalized Medicine

In a major step toward integrating traditional knowledge systems with modern biotechnology, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched the National Ayush-Genomics Portal, a digital platform designed to deliver personalized health recommendations using genetic data and Ayurvedic principles.

The initiative aims to combine genomics with Ayurveda to offer tailored dietary and lifestyle guidance for citizens based on their biological and constitutional profiles.

Personalized Health Recommendations Through Genomic Data

The portal enables users to upload genetic profiles, which are sequenced at government-subsidized laboratories. Based on this data, the system generates personalized recommendations that integrate modern genomic analysis with Ayurvedic concepts such as Prakriti (body constitution).

Officials stated that the platform is built on the National Health Stack and is designed to ensure secure handling of sensitive genetic information.

Focus on Predictive and Preventive Healthcare

At the launch, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the broader vision behind the initiative, stating:

“India is moving from curative healthcare to predictive and preventive wellness.”

The government aims to reduce the national burden of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and hypertension by 20% by 2030 through preventive and data-driven health interventions.

Data Privacy and Genomic Protection Framework

Alongside the portal, the government introduced the “Genomic Privacy Act, 2026”, aimed at safeguarding citizens’ genetic data.

The framework ensures that genomic information remains encrypted and under the sole ownership of individuals. It also restricts access by insurance companies and employers to prevent misuse of sensitive health data.

Advancing “Ethno-Genomics” and Research Integration

Researchers involved in the initiative believe the platform could advance the field of “Ethno-genomics,” combining population-level genetic insights with Ayurvedic classification systems.

The goal is to better understand how genetic markers and traditional health profiles intersect, potentially enabling the development of therapies and interventions tailored to South Asian populations.

Economic and Digital Health Expansion

The global personalized medicine sector is projected to reach $500 billion by 2028, and India is positioning itself as a competitive hub for low-cost, high-tech solutions in this space.

Startups in Bengaluru and Hyderabad are already integrating platform APIs to develop wellness tools, including “smart kitchen” systems that suggest recipes based on both genetic data and Ayurvedic profiles.

Strong Early Response to Pilot Rollout

According to initial rollout data, the platform was launched across 10 major cities and recorded over 2 million registrations within the first six hours, indicating strong public interest in personalized, data-driven healthcare solutions.

While some experts and practitioners remain cautious about the hybrid model combining traditional and modern systems, the government maintains that the approach reflects a broader shift toward integrated wellness.
