Goa to Expand All India Institute of Ayurveda Campus With Cancer Research Facilities

The Goa government has announced plans to expand the campus of the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) in Dhargal, allocating additional land to strengthen research and healthcare services. The expansion aims to establish specialised facilities, including a cancer research centre, central laboratories and advanced healthcare infrastructure.
The announcement was made by Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant during the inauguration of new healthcare facilities at AIIA Goa.
50 Acres Allocated for Expansion
According to Sawant, the state government will allot 50 acres of land to support the institute’s expansion. The additional space will be used to develop a Cancer Research Centre, central research laboratories, pharmacy facilities and other healthcare infrastructure.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister said the expansion would strengthen specialised Ayurvedic services and improve patient care.
“It is a matter of pride that as many as 50% of the 100 undergraduate seats at AIIA are reserved for Goan students. AIIA Goa is committed to promoting traditional systems of medicine alongside modern healthcare,” Sawant said.
He added that the newly inaugurated facilities would significantly enhance access to specialised Ayurvedic treatments and expand healthcare services for residents.
New Healthcare Facilities Inaugurated
Several specialised units were inaugurated at the AIIA campus to improve patient care and clinical services. These include:
- Sushruta OT Complex – A modern surgical facility designed to strengthen Ayurvedic surgical procedures.
- Physiotherapy Unit – A rehabilitation centre providing therapeutic support for patients requiring physical recovery services.
- Kaumarbhritya Panchakarma Unit – A specialised unit offering Panchakarma therapies for children and promoting holistic pediatric healthcare.
- Bone Mineral Density (BMD) Unit – A diagnostic facility for assessing bone health and supporting early detection of osteoporosis and related conditions.
The facilities were inaugurated in the presence of Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH Prataprao Jadhav, AYUSH Secretary Rajesh Kotecha, AIIA Director P. K. Prajapati, and AIIA Goa Dean Sujata Kadam.
Strengthening Ayurveda Infrastructure
Speaking at the event, Prataprao Jadhav said the government is working to expand Ayurveda infrastructure and improve access to traditional healthcare systems across India.
“The Ministry of Ayush is continuously working to strengthen Ayurveda infrastructure across the country. The new facilities at AIIA Goa will further support holistic healthcare delivery and benefit patients through integrative treatment approaches,” he said.
Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary at the Ministry of AYUSH, highlighted AIIA’s role in advancing Ayurveda education, research and clinical care.
“AIIA has been playing a pivotal role in strengthening Ayurveda education, research and patient care. The addition of these facilities will further enhance the institute’s capacity to deliver specialised healthcare services while promoting evidence-based Ayurveda and integrative medicine,” Kotecha said.
Focus on Integrative and Preventive Healthcare
AIIA Director P. K. Prajapati said the new units mark an important step toward strengthening patient-centred Ayurvedic healthcare services.
“These facilities will enable us to provide comprehensive treatment, promote preventive healthcare, and enhance the quality of services available to patients,” Prajapati noted.
Dean Sujata Kadam added that the facilities will also enhance clinical training and research opportunities for students and scholars while integrating modern diagnostics with Ayurvedic principles.
Expanding the Role of Ayurveda in Modern Healthcare
The expansion of the AIIA campus reflects the government’s broader effort to integrate traditional medicine with modern healthcare systems. The upcoming research facilities and clinical infrastructure are expected to support advanced treatment services while promoting evidence-based Ayurveda.
With the addition of new healthcare units and plans for a dedicated cancer research centre, the institute aims to expand access to specialised treatment and strengthen its role as a key centre for Ayurvedic education and research in India.
