Tripura Expands AYUSH Education with Two New Medical Colleges, 60 Seats Each

In a significant push to traditional medicine education, the Tripura Cabinet has approved the establishment of two new medical colleges—one for Ayurveda and another for Homeopathy. Each institution will offer 60 seats and is expected to begin operations from the 2026–27 academic session.
The announcement was made during a press conference attended by Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, who confirmed that the Council of Ministers had cleared the proposal to expand AYUSH education in the state.
## Locations and Operational Plans Finalised
According to the approved plan, the Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital will initially function from Chandrapur in Gomati district. A permanent campus is under development at Tepania in the same district.
Meanwhile, the Homeopathy Medical College and Hospital will be set up at the Netaji Subhash Homeopathic Hospital in West Tripura district.
Both institutions are being designed to strengthen access to specialised medical education in traditional systems while addressing growing demand among students.
## ₹140 Crore Central Support for Implementation
Chief Minister Manik Saha recently confirmed that the Ministry of AYUSH has sanctioned ₹140 crore for the project. Sharing the update, he stated, “The Ministry of Ayush, Government of India has sanctioned ₹140 crore for establishing Ayurveda Medical College and Homoeopathy Medical College in Tripura.”
A high-level meeting has already been conducted to finalise the roadmap for implementation. Officials reviewed infrastructure requirements and outlined steps to ensure the colleges are operational on schedule.
## Boost to Medical Education Infrastructure
Tripura currently has three medical colleges, including Agartala Government Medical College, which offers postgraduate courses in multiple disciplines. The addition of Ayurveda and Homeopathy colleges is expected to diversify academic opportunities and strengthen the state’s healthcare education ecosystem.
The move aligns with a broader national effort to promote traditional systems of medicine under the AYUSH framework, while also expanding access to specialised training in these fields.
Chief Minister Saha also expressed gratitude to the central leadership, acknowledging the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda, and Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH Prataprao Yadav.
## Growing Focus on AYUSH Education Nationwide
Tripura’s initiative comes amid a wider push across India to enhance AYUSH education infrastructure. Similar developments have been reported in other regions, including plans for new Ayurveda institutions and advanced courses aimed at strengthening traditional medicine systems.
The upcoming colleges are expected to play a key role in meeting rising demand for alternative medicine education while contributing to the state’s healthcare capacity.
